With JPG Magazine back up and running, I decided that this revival means that I should actively participate in this new community. I did love it and enjoyed it from when it first came out, but I never participated. Mainly because of my own insecurities. But seriously how can I learn and grow without putting myself out there to be criticized? So, here it is, my first JPG submission…

Living Room
Right now there hasn’t been too many views, just 17 and only a few people have voted for it. It’s a start though!! I’m excited
If you think it’s good enough to be published in the next issue of JPG, please vote for me.

Using the color scheme from Color Combos Gallore Challenge #110,

…I created a 4 pages. I also decided to expand a little and painted a few more pages. Each took about 15 – 20 minutes. I started off with a base color and then slowly incorporated other colors. Different patterns. And I also didn’t use all 4 colors.

The colors I used weren’t exactly like the colors in the challenge. I changed it up where my yellow was light gold. Which made the yellow not so harsh. I also had create the madarine orange colors. And I don’t think they looked too close. But it was as close as I could get.

This is the same color with a little variation in the painting.

This only has two colors. Less the yellow.

This is just a mix of colors I wanted to try
Then in the middle of the week I started picking out images that I wanted to incorporate in the pages. And tonight I added only a few images to the pages. Here’s how they turned out.

The images from this journal page is from the Crow About Group. Not sure what or how I’ll be filling the pages. But right now I see it as a nice base. I like the colors in this.

I’m not very big on the color yellow. In fact I don’t like it much at all. So, I felt this was something inhibiting. I decided to use the color more. The above color challenge made feel like trying to use a bolder color. The emphemera is from different items I had laying around. The little red sugar packet is from the 24/7 Restaurant at The Standard in Los Angeles. It’s suppose to be a well known hotel with a swimming pool on the roof. I use to make it a point to have lunch down there. They have this great Thai Beef Salad. I might actually write about that on this page.
Did you have an opportunity to paint a few pages? What did you?

There are many different processes of how one starts their journal. I searched online and found a few. I’ve never been one who wanted to reinvent the wheel when there’s perfectly great information out there. My personal favorite instructional is Teesha Moore’s, How I Journal. She lists 4 different layers that she works on to acheive her pages. I’m going to follow her concept but personalize it for me and my availability.
First layer. Now I don’t want my pages to be extremely thick with paint, so I’m going to water down my acrylics to give a similar watercolor wash. Teesha’s technique, she uses watercolor.
I don’t have much time to spend a whole day working on my pages, so I’m going to paint up to 5 pages. You would think this easy to do. But, in the last group I was in, they suggested to do the same. And I just couldn’t. In my mind I wanted to have all the elements in my page ready. I wanted to complete a page or two even if it didn’t include journaling I wanted the page as complete as it could be. But, again my time is limited so I need to break out of this inhibiting need. I was looking at the Color Combo Galore challenge and I like the last challenge of colors they had. I’m going to use #110 challenge. The colors are: soft teal, mandarine orange, vanilla pudding and sundance.

A little bit about Color Combo Galore Challenge. I think it’s a great challenge blog/group. I love that they give you a color scheme. I think it helps you step out of your boundaries and lets you create with colors you might not necessarily use all the time.
As for the journal. If you want to join me, take sometime to paint on 5 pages. Don’t think about images, or what you want the page to eventually turn into. Let this be the start of the creative flow and just put colors on the page. What colors to use? Pick a few colors maybe 1 -4 colors and just start painting. You can use one color for one page, you can combine 2, you can combine 3, or use all 4. Take a look at the archived Color Combo Challenges to get inspiration. Look at a favorite scrapbook page you like and pull the main colors from there. Maybe a favorite photograph and pull the colors from there. But, find yourself some colors and start painting.
